Clinical Pharmacology
The basic principle of peritoneal dialysis is creating an osmotic gradient across the peritoneal membrane through dextrose. The dextrose in the CAPD solution makes it hyperosmolar to plasma, enabling the transfer of toxic substances and metabolites, present in high concentration in the blood, across the peritoneal membrane into the dialysate.
